Roland’s V-Piano

August 18th, 2009 Curt No comments

You might have caught in previous posts that we use a Roland KR series piano for a majority of the recording that we do. In some cases, we use only the piano sounds from the unit, while in others we use some of the other sounds available in the unit. In just about all cases, we are using the KR as a MIDI keyboard to trigger sounds from virtual sound modules.

We do all of sequencing and recording work in Sonar, now a member of the Roland family, and use a small set of monitors from Edirol, also a member of the Roland family to do mixing on. So, I guess you could say we like Roland products.

Roland recently introduced a new piano adding to their “V” series of products. A nice review of the new V-Piano is available over on the Electronic Musician site. We have had a chance to play the new piano and can say it is a great piece. Check out the full review at http://emusician.com/elecinstruments/roland-v-piano-review-0909/index.html

Backing Track Formats

May 25th, 2009 Curt No comments

We are taking a week long poll, (05/25-05/31) on backing tracks and what format is important to you. Most customers that use backing tracks are familiar with the long standing MIDI format. As MIDI has progressed over the years we have gone from General MIDI to General MIDI 2. While GM2 files do allow a wider range of patches and drum sets to be used, you are still somewhat limited when compared to the vast array of instrumentation that is available today that doesn’t conform to GM / GM2 formats.

We offer files in GM, GM2 and MP3 formats. Generally the MP3 format files will offer more life like instrumentation. Since a MIDI file depends on the sound quality of the MIDI device playing the file, the end result can range from poor to acceptable. Once you switch over to using an audio format file, such as a wave or MP3 file, the audio quality of the file will increase significantly. One major downside would be the size of the file. Once again, as technology moves forward that starts to become less and less of an issue.

We are very interested in your input so we can produce music in a format that is useful to you. Please take a few minutes to answer a simple one question poll over at http://tr.im/mmD0

Thanks Ric and Curt.

Using Twitter and Associated Utilities

May 23rd, 2009 Curt No comments

Generally we try to talk about something music related on this site. That could be an article related to MIDI, how to do something on your Roland keyboard, or something about a project we are working on. While this post isn’t music related, it does relate to the current state of affairs of staying in touch with your customer base in today’s online world.

If you have spent more than five minutes online or watching just about any TV newscast in the past six months, you have heard of Twitter. We are not going to talk about what Twitter is, but instead, a few Twitter utilities we are playing with to see how they can be used in today’s online world.

The first one is tr.im. In case you don’t know, when you tweet something you are limited to 140 characters. If by chance you would like to include a URL in your tweet, it could very well use up a significant portion of your 140 characters. There are a number of utilities that will shorten the URL so you can post it as a part or your Tweet. We have started using tr.im and it provides some very nice metrics on the URL’s that you post as part of a Tweet. If you are using one of the many URL shortening utilities, we suggest you take a look at tr.im. We will be using it from this point forward!

The next one we are taking for a test drive is from the family of products available from twtapps. We have setup an online business card. If you would like one tweet us! The folks over at twtapps have a whole collection of apps you can use to poll your customers, generate online coupons for promotions, a business directory listing and much more. Certainly worth a look!
